Department of Physics at Tsinghua University

The Physics Department of Tsinghua University was established in 1926. Led by Professor Chi-sun Yeh, the Department has earned reputation as one of the best Physics Departments in China.

Due to the Resistance War against the Japanese Invasion in 1937, the Department was forced to move to Kunming and join with the physics departments of Peking University and Nankai University to form the Physics Department of Southwest Associated University. It is a wonder that two Nobel Laureates (Chen-Ning Yang and Tsung-Dao Lee) and a great amount of Chinese outstanding scholars were educated there and then.

In 1946, The Department was moved back to its original location in Beijing with Tsinghua after the war. With the nationwide restructuring of universities and colleges undertaken in 1952 in China, the Department dissolved and most of its faculty members and students joined Peking University.

The Department was re-established in 1982. From then on, with the great efforts of the faculties and students, the Department has been developing at a breathtaking space. Now it has become one of the most important research centers and cultivating bases of physics in China.
